Background
Alison Alter was elected to Austin City Council in 2016. Alter graduated from Stanford University and earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Prior to joining the city council, she worked in higher education and the nonprofit sector.
Homelessness
Council Member Alter voted against repealing the public camping ban but for repealing sit/lie restrictions in June 2019. Alter also voted against the partially reinstated camping restrictions in October 2019 after amendments that further limited public camping were rejected.
Public Safety
Alter voted in favor of FY2021 budget amendments that cut the police department budget by as much as $150 million and canceled cadet classes next year.
